3. TRANSMITTED THROUGH MOSQUITO BITES
It can be transmitted through mosquito bites. This myth is FALSE. There has been no information nor evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus could be transmitted by mosquitoes.
4. HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THERMAL SCANNERS IN DETECTING PEOPLE WITH CORONAVIRUS ?
How effective are thermal scanners in detecting people infected with CoVID-19 ? They are not 100% effective for detection of the virus. Thermal scanners are effective in detecting people who have developed a fever. Fever is one of the the symptoms of the coronavirus infection, this causes an increase in temperature. However, thermal scanners can not detect people who are infected but are not yet sick.
5. RINSING YOUR NOSE WITH SALINE
Rinsing your nose with saline (salt solution) will kill the virus. This myth is FALSE. There is no evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from being infected with the coronavirus. There is some limited evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline can help people recover more quickly from the common cold. However, regularly rinsing the nose has not been shown to prevent respiratory infections.
6. EATING GARLIC PREVENTS GETTING CORONAVIRUS.
Eating garlic will reduce your chances of getting the coronavirus infection. This myth is FALSE. Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the coronavirus (COVID-19).
7. ONLY OLD PEOPLE CAN BE INFECTED BY THE CORONAVIRUS.
Only old people can be infected by the coronavirus. This myth is FALSE. People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (COVID-19). Older people and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart diseases, etc appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus. WHO advise people of all age to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene. It has reportedly affected babies too so it does not have an age barrier.
8. ARE ANTIBIOTICS EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING & TREATING CORONAVIRUS ?
Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the virus ? No, antibiotics do not work against viruses only bacteria. The coronavirus is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment. However, if you are hospitalized for the coronavirus, you may receive antibiotics since bacterial co-infection is possible.
9. SWALLOWING & GURGLING BLEACH/SALINE
Swallowing or gurgling bleach, acetic acid, steroids or saline (salt solution) will kill the coronavirus. This myth is FALSE. There is no evidence that this prevents the virus.
10. PNEUMONIA VACCINES
Pneumonia vaccines protects us against COVID-19. This myth is FALSE. Pneumonia vaccines has its purpose but since the coronavirus is different there has not been any vaccine yet.
11. HOLDING YOUR BREATH FOR 10 SECONDS
Holding your breath for 10 seconds without feeling any discomfort means there is no fibrosis or scaring in the lungs thus no infection. Holding your breath is not a test for fibrosis. Fibrosis is not a symptom of the coronavirus infection.
12. DRINKING WATER EVERY 15 MINUTES
Drinking water every 15 minutes. This myth is false. Being hydrated is good for your health but no evidence has shown that drinking water every 15 minutes protects or prevents you from getting the coronavirus.
13. DRINKING COW URINE
Drinking cow urine will cure the disease. This myth is FALSE. Some Indians believe that the cow urine has some medicinal properties but there is no evidence of cow urine preventing or curing the disease.
14. DOES NOT AFFECT AFRICANS / BLACK PEOPLE
The coronavirus does not affect africans or black people. This myth is FALSE. It has been reported to affect all kinds of races. So far, it has cut across all types of races. Africans are not immune.
